The Billionaire's Forgotten Wife

The Billionaire's Forgotten Wife

The sharp smell of antiseptic filled the air as I entered the hospital's private waiting room. The glaringly white walls seemed to close in as I stepped closer to the group of doctors and executives huddled near the corner. They murmured in low tones, but their smiles were guarded, their glances toward me uneasy.

This wasnt supposed to happen. Nathaniel had asked me to be here, his wife, the woman who stood by him for five years while he built the Archer empire from nothing to a billion-dollar name. Yet, as I scanned the room, he was nowhere in sight.

Mrs. Archer, one of the doctors said, his tone carefully neutral.

Yes? I replied, keeping my voice steady despite the unease creeping up my spine.

Mr. Archer asked us to bring you upstairs when you arrived. Hes in the VIP suite.

A ripple of discomfort spread through me, but I nodded, brushing invisible wrinkles from my tailored dress. This wasnt the celebration dinner we had planned. Nathaniel had insisted on postponing it at the last minute, claiming he needed to handle a personal matter.

I took the elevator up, my heels clicking against the marble floors as I followed the nurse to the suite. The door was ajar. Voices spilled outNathaniels, warm and familiar, mixed with soft laughter I couldnt quite place.

I stepped inside, and the sight hit me like a blow.

Nathaniel was sitting beside a woman on the edge of the bed. She was beautiful in an effortless, golden sort of way, her loose curls framing a face that radiated confidence. She looked like she belonged there. But it wasnt just her presenceit was the small, unmistakable swell of her stomach that caught my attention.

Nathaniels head snapped toward me. His face froze, but not in guiltno, it was more like hed been caught in a moment he hadnt yet figured out how to explain.

Claire, he said, rising to his feet.

My gaze darted between him and the woman. The way she looked at mea smug little smile playing on her lipstold me everything I needed to know.

Who is she? My voice was barely above a whisper.

Im Dana, Dana White, the woman said smoothly, her hand resting on her stomach as though she wanted to make sure I didnt miss the significance of the gesture. Nathaniels She glanced at him, savoring the pause. Well, I think you know.

Stop, Nathaniel snapped at her before turning back to me. Claire, its not what you think.

I laughed, the sound bitter and sharp. Not what I think? Then tell me what it is, Nathaniel. Tell me why the woman youre apparently having a child with is here, in our space.

Its complicated, he began, his tone infuriatingly calm, like this was some negotiation he could control.

Complicated? I echoed, taking a step closer. You think this is complicated? Because to me, it seems pretty simple. You betrayed me.

Nathaniel rubbed a hand over his face, and for a moment, I thought I saw regret flicker in his eyes. But it was fleeting, drowned out by something colderpride, or maybe self-preservation.

I wanted to tell you sooner, he said.

But you didnt. My voice cracked, and I hated myself for it. You let me walk in here and find out like this.

Danas voice cut through the tension. Claire, Im not here to ruin your life. This She gestured between her and Nathaniel. It just happened. And frankly, its what Nathaniel needs right now. Someone who can give him the family hes always wanted.

The air left my lungs. Id heard those words before, whispered in the quiet moments when Nathaniel thought I wasnt listening. He wanted children, an heir to the Archer legacy. And I I couldnt give him that.

Get out, I said, my voice low but firm.

Dana arched an eyebrow. Excuse me?

I said, get out. My glare was unwavering. This isnt your home. Its mine.

Claire, Nathaniel began, but I held up a hand to silence him.

Youve made your choices, Nathaniel. I spoke lowly.

Dana hesitated, but the steel in my voice must have convinced her. She stood, smoothing her dress with deliberate grace. Youre stronger than I thought, she whispered as she walked past me, her heels clicking softly on the floor.

Nathaniel moved to follow her, but I stepped in his path. Dont, I said, my voice trembling. If you leave with her now, dont come back.

Claire don't be a child, it's really not likeable trait in a woman.

I didnt wait to hear the rest. I turned and walked out, my heart pounding in my chest. The betrayal cut deep, but I wouldnt let it destroy me. Not tonight. Not ever.

Claire, wait, I heard Nathaniel call out.

I looked over my shoulder.

I plan on announcing this joyous news to the board of directors, they've been begging me for an heir for far too long.

What? My heart sank.

The soft hum of conversation filled the private dining room at Aurum, the citys most exclusive restaurant. I sat at the head of the table, nursing a glass of red wine as the tables other occupantsbusiness associates and board members of Archer Enterpriseschatted around me. This was Nathaniels domain, but tonight, it felt like mine.

Until the door opened.

Nathaniel walked in, flanked by a woman I recognized instantlyClaire Lang. She was stunning, in an effortless, curated way: a shimmering emerald dress that hugged her figure and an expensive pair of heels that clicked confidently against the marble floors. Her hand rested on her barely noticeable bump.

My grip on the glass tightened, but my face remained impassive.

Claire, Nathaniel greeted, his deep voice carrying across the room. He approached with that same charming smile he used to disarm investors and close deals. Sorry were late. Traffic was terrible.

I forced a polite smile, glancing briefly at Claire before my gaze shifted back to Nathaniel. No problem. Weve only just started.

Claire smiled at me, saccharine and carefully rehearsed. Claire, its lovely to see you again.

I inclined my head. Claire.

Nathaniel pulled out a chair for her beside him, and she sat gracefully, her hand never leaving her stomach. The sight made my chest tighten, but I kept my expression neutral. This wasnt the place to break.

Dinner began, the clinking of silverware and soft laughter filling the air. I sat quietly, pretending to be engrossed in my filet mignon, though every word from Claires mouth felt like a dagger.

Ive been so fortunate, she said, her voice lilting. Nathaniels been incredible through everything. I mean, between managing Archer Enterprises and this, she said, glancing down at her bump, hes been so attentive.

The table erupted in polite chuckles, save for me.

Youre lucky, I said coolly, setting down my fork. Nathaniels always had a talent for juggling responsibilities.

Nathaniels gaze flicked to me, but I kept my eyes on my plate. I could feel him trying to gauge my mood, but I wasnt about to give him the satisfaction of a reaction.

As the dinner wore on, I caught fragments of conversation. Claire, talking about nursery plans and baby names, while Nathaniel smiled indulgently. The man who once promised me the world now beamed at the woman carrying his child.

The dessert course arrived, but I barely touched it. Finally, the inevitable moment came.

Nathaniel cleared his throat, drawing the tables attention. Everyone, thank you for coming tonight. I wanted to share some personal news.

The room fell silent.

Claire and I are expecting, he said, his voice filled with pride. Its a boy.

The table erupted in applause and cheers. I stayed perfectly still, my hands folded neatly on the table.

Congratulations, I said finally, my voice smooth and detached.

Claire turned to me, her eyes sparkling. Thank you, Claire. Your support means so much. Truly.

I met her gaze, unflinching. Of course. This is a monumental step for Nathaniel. Im sure hell need all the support he can get.

Her smile faltered for a fraction of a second, but she recovered quickly.

As the evening wound down, Nathaniel excused himself to take a phone call, leaving Claire and me alone at the table. She leaned in slightly, her expression softening in what I could only assume was mock concern.

Claire, I cant imagine how hard this must be for you, she said.

I tilted my head, feigning confusion. Hard?

Well, you and Nathaniel were together for so long She trailed off, her hand once again resting on her stomach. But youre so composed. I admire that.

My lips curved into a small, cold smile. Claire, Ive had years of practice managing difficult situations. This is no different.

Her eyes narrowed, just slightly, but before she could respond, Nathaniel returned.

We should get going, he said, glancing between us. Claire needs to rest.

I stood gracefully, smoothing the fabric of my dress. Of course. Take care, Claire.

As they left, arm in arm, I remained in the dining room, staring at the untouched dessert in front of me. My chest felt hollow, but I refused to cry.

Nathaniel had made his choice. He had replaced me, discarded the woman who had been by his side when he had nothing, for someone younger, someone who could give him what I couldnt.

But I wasnt going to break. Not here. Not now.

Because if there was one thing Id learned from being Nathaniel Archers wife, it was this: you dont let them see you bleed.

I arrived at the penthouse at precisely seven, feeling the familiar pang of dread as I stepped inside the sleek, minimalist foyer.

His apartment was everything you would expect from a man of his wealth and statusmodern, spacious, and cold. Polished marble floors, glass walls with panoramic views of the city, and the faint scent of leather and expensive cologne. It should have felt like home, but tonight, it felt like a prison.

I stiffened as I heard a couple of familiar laughs. I knew those voices. Nathaniels friends.

Nathaniel had invited his closest friends to the house for an informal dinner, though I knew it wasnt just about catching up. It was herDanahe was introducing to the people who mattered most to him. I had no doubt that tonights event was meant to solidify her place in his life, a place that once belonged to me.

As I walked through the living room, I saw themtheir laughter echoing across the room as they clinked glasses, their voices warm and familiar. Nathaniel was in the center of it all, standing by the bar, a smile stretched across his face that I hadnt seen in months. He looked happya happiness I had not been able to bring him in recent years. And standing next to him, smiling with practiced ease, was Dana.

The sight of them together, so natural, so at ease, made my stomach churn. I had been nothing but a figure in his life for the past few years, a distant memory to him. But Dana she had everything. A fresh start, a clean slate. She was his now. The thought made my heart heavy with resentment.

Claire! Youre here! A womans voice broke me from my thoughts, and I turned to see one of Nathaniels longtime friends, Sora, walking toward me. We were just congratulating Dana and Nathaniel. Its so lovely to see a couple like you two together.

The words stung, though they were delivered with a cheery tone. I glanced at Nathaniel and Dana, whose faces lit up at the mention of their couple status. Dana, ever the picture of humility, lowered her gaze, her hands nervously adjusting her dress as she blushed.

Oh, stop it, Dana muttered, though there was a hint of pride in her voice. She seemed flustered, trying to remain humble, but she loved the attention. She could never hide that.

You two are adorable, another friend chimed in, smiling too broadly. Finally, someone who fits Nathaniels level. So much better than, well... The person trailed off, giving a pointed glance at me, barely concealing the criticism behind the words.

Dana looked up at me, her eyes flicking from the group to me with that same sweet, insincere smile. She cleared her throat, her voice a little more hesitant now. Please, dont Her words trailed off as she cast a quick glance at Nathaniel, her discomfort showing only momentarily before it was masked again with that polished persona of hers.

But Nathaniel didnt speak up. He didnt tell them to stop. He didnt defend me or acknowledge what was being said. Instead, he smiled at Dana, a smile I had once seen directed at me, and nodded in agreement with their praise.

Yeah, its been a long time coming, Nathaniel said, his voice warm, but detached, as though the words held no real meaning. "Its good to have found someone who fits.

I bit my lip, trying to keep my composure as my chest tightened painfully. His words were like knives, and yet, it was his indifference that hurt the most. He didnt even seem to notice the barb that had been thrown in my direction.

For a split second, I thought I saw a flicker of regret in his eyes, but it quickly disappeared as he turned to Dana, his hand resting on her back in a possessive manner. His touch was subtle, but it was there. And that simple action, that small show of affection, was enough to remind me of everything I had lost.

Im sure Sora didnt mean anything by it, Dana said, her voice still soft, though the edge of pride returned, as she subtly pulled Nathaniels attention back to her. It was clear she didnt want anyone questioning her place in his life.

Im sure she didnt, Nathaniel replied easily, his gaze never leaving Dana.

I had become a mere afterthought.

I forced myself to smile, even though it felt like my face was frozen. Its lovely, I said, though the words were hollow. I gave Dana a small, polite nod, my lips pressing together in a controlled manner. Congratulations. Truly.

She smiled again, that smile of sweet victory that I could almost taste in the air. Thank you, Kate. Im really glad you could make it tonight.

But I could see the way she said it. She wasnt being kind. It was a message. She was here, and I wasnt. She was Nathaniels choice. I was the past.

The laughter continued around me as I stood silently, watching them, knowing deep down that nothing would ever be the same. Nathaniel was no longer mine, and Dana was his future. And I could do nothing but watch as my world crumbled silently, piece by piece, around me.

Her dress was simple, yet it screamed elegance in a way that made me feel invisible. She was everything I wasntyoung, vibrant, and undeniably beautiful. And she was carrying his child. I hated how natural it seemed, the way Nathaniel looked at her, the way his hand rested on her lower back, as though claiming her before anyone could say a word.

I stood there until I could take it anymore and gathered my composure. I walked toward them, the heels of my shoes clicking loudly against the marble floor.

Claire, Nathaniel greeted, his voice casual but lacking warmth, as if he were addressing an acquaintance rather than his partner of seven years. He didnt even move to stand, as he had so many times before.

Nathaniel, I replied coolly, my voice steady despite the storm raging inside me. I turned to Dana, who was already looking at me with that same smug, superior smile shed worn ever since shed arrived.

Dana, I acknowledged, though the word felt like venom on my tongue. I could almost see her savoring it, the way she tilted her head slightly, as though she were waiting for me to bow to her new status.

Im so glad you could you're here, Claire, Dana said, her voice sweet, but I could see the hint of mockery hidden beneath it. Nathaniel thought it would be nice for me to meet everyone. After all, Im carrying the future of his legacy.

The future of his legacy. I fought to keep my face neutral.

Im sure, I replied tightly, my gaze flicking briefly to Nathaniel. His face remained unreadable, but his eyes shifted away from mine the second I met his gaze. A pang of hurt flashed in my chest, but I quickly buried it beneath layers of calm.

I excused myself from the group, walking across the room with as much dignity as I could muster, but on the inside, I was breaking.

Dana had everything. And somehow, it seemed as though Nathaniel had forgotten all the years we had sharedforgotten that I had once been the one standing by his side, that I had been the one he had claimed he needed.

I needed air.

I walked to the balcony and stepped outside, leaning against the railing, looking at the city lights below.

I heard footsteps behind me, and I knew it was him.

You shouldnt be out here alone, Claire, Nathaniels voice said from behind me, almost too calm, too detached.

I turned to face him, my heart pounding. Its funny, Nathaniel. You didnt mind leaving me alone when you made your choice. Why does it matter now?

His expression faltered for a second, but he quickly recovered, his eyes cold and unreadable. Dont do this.

I laughed bitterly, wiping my face. Dont do what, Nathaniel? The truth?

You knew this was always going to happen, he said, his voice low. Im doing whats best for for my bloodline, my company, it's been passed down generations, I can't be the only Archer who'll pass down the company to someone that isn't my blood. This. This is... for my legacy.

I shook my head, a bitter smile tugging at my lips. Your legacy? I whispered. No, Nathaniel. We were supposed to be your legacy. But that was before you decided to replace me with her.

What did I say about acting like a child Claire? It's beginning to become annoying, Nathaniel said with a cold look.

The words hung in the air, sharp and cruel. But they felt like the truth. He really did find me annoying didn't he? I nearly laughed, oh Claire, look how far you've sunken in the name of love.

And for the first time in a long time, I didnt care how much it hurt.

Nate, how can you say such a thing to her, Claire is just working out the kinks, she doesn't really mind about all this does she? Along came Dana with her chirpy voice.

I felt a nauseous feeling curl in my stomach.
